Hello
We opened in October 2023 by a group of dedicated volunteers, and continue to operate with the help of 40+ volunteers and one paid member of staff.
Off the back of running a fruit & veg box scheme for families during the Covid-19 pandemic, it became clear that there was a need for both redistributing surplus ingredients, and making sure everyone has access to healthy, affordable food in Otley.
We now have a shop run by volunteers at the Otley Social Club, Hollin Gate, Otley, LS21 2DP. We open Tuesdays 2.30-7.30pm and Saturdays 10.30am-1.30pm.
My Story
The Otley Community Larder is an Otley 2030 project that rescues surplus food from supermarkets, wholesalers, and local producers — good food that would otherwise go to waste — and makes it available to everyone, on a pay-as-you-feel basis. We’re not a food bank. There are no referrals, no criteria — just an open invitation to enjoy food, reduce waste, and support each other with dignity.
Fighting waste, feeding our town
By redistributing food, we stop edible produce from going to landfill — cutting carbon emissions and easing financial pressures at the same time. It’s a simple way to help the planet while nourishing our community.
The Bigger Picture
We started the Larder to tackle two big challenges: the climate emergency and the cost-of-living crisis. Around 8-10% of global greenhouse gas emissions come from food waste, so rescuing food is an easy win for the environment. At the same time, parts of Otley have limited access to fresh, affordable food.
Doughnut Economics
We’re also inspired by Doughnut Economics — a framework that helps communities thrive within the planet’s limits. The Larder is our way of making that real in Otley. You can learn more about Doughnut Economics here: About Doughnut Economics | DEAL
